What is Shingles?

Shingles is a viral infection caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox.

It usually appears as a painful rash on one side of the body or face and can cause burning, tingling, or sharp pain before and during the rash. While shingles often clears with time, early treatment is important to reduce symptoms and the risk of complications.

How is Shingles usually treated?

Treatment focuses on reducing the severity and duration of symptoms and preventing complications. Common approaches include:

  • Antiviral medication – most effective when started early.
  • Pain relief – to manage nerve pain and discomfort.
  • Soothing treatments – creams or dressings to reduce skin irritation.
  • Rest and self-care – to support recovery.
  • Medical monitoring – especially if the rash affects the face or eyes.

Early treatment can help shingles clear faster and reduce the risk of long-term nerve pain.
