What is Acute Sinusitis?

Acute sinusitis is a short-term infection or inflammation of the sinuses, often caused by a viral or bacterial infection.

It typically develops after a cold or upper respiratory infection and can cause facial pain, pressure, congestion, and thick nasal discharge.

Most cases improve within 7–10 days, but some infections may require medical assessment and treatment.

How is acute sinusitis usually treated?

Many cases of acute sinusitis are caused by viral infections and get better without antibiotics. Treatment depends on your symptoms and medical history, and may include:

  • Nasal sprays to reduce inflammation and congestion
  • Advice on pain relief and symptom control
  • Decongestants (when appropriate)
  • Antibiotics, only if a bacterial infection is suspected and it’s clinically appropriate

A clinician will review your consultation and recommend the most suitable option for you.
